Gram Panchayat Map
Vellamunda is a stunning hill gram panchayat located in Mananthavady taluk and Mananthavady block of Wayanad district. Blending the presence of the Western Ghats with an agrarian culture, this region reflects the distinct landscape of Wayanad.
1. Area and Boundaries
Spanning an area of 64.54 square kilometers, Vellamunda Gram Panchayat is situated in a geographically strategic zone. Its precise boundaries are as follows:
- North: Edavaka Gram Panchayat
- East: Karakkamala (an area sharing boundaries with Mananthavady Municipality / Panamaram Panchayat)
- South: Kaiputhusseri River (the natural boundary separating it from Padinjarathara Panchayat)
- West: The famous Banasura Mountain (Western Ghats)
2. Topography
Bordered by the plateau-like Banasura mountain ranges on the west and Karakkamala on the east, Vellamunda is a terrain characterized by hills and valleys. Situated at a considerable altitude above sea level, its primary landscape features include terraced hill slopes and fertile paddy fields (plains) nestled between them.
3. Water Resources
Flowing along the southern boundary of the panchayat, the Kaiputhusseri River serves as the prime lifeline of the region. Numerous small streams and springs originating from the Banasura hills and Karakkamala flow into this river, as well as into other tributaries of the Kabini. These water sources are crucial for the panchayat's drinking water projects and agriculture.
4. Soil and Agricultural System
The gravelly red soil found in the hilly regions and the rich black and alluvial soils found in the valleys keep Vellamunda at the forefront of agriculture:
- Hilly Regions/Slopes: Coffee, black pepper, rubber, areca nut, and coconut are predominantly cultivated here. Cash crops such as ginger and turmeric are also widely grown.
- Low-lying Paddies: Traditionally renowned for paddy cultivation. Additionally, Nendran banana cultivation is carried out on a large scale.
5. Climate
The presence of the Banasura mountain ranges on the western border strongly influences the climate of Vellamunda:
- The region experiences a pleasant, cool tropical hill climate.
- It receives abundant rainfall during the southwest monsoon from June to September and the northeast monsoon (Thulavarsham) in October-November.
- Due to its proximity to the Western Ghats forest region, even the summer season experiences high humidity and relatively low temperatures.
6. Environmental Significance
Bordering the forest areas of the Banasura mountain ranges, it is an Ecologically Sensitive region. Rich in biodiversity, the local forests harbor rare plant species and wildlife. Furthermore, because of its landslide-prone hill slopes, environmental conservation is of paramount importance in this area.
In Short:
With the protection of the Banasura mountain in the west, the nourishment of the Kaiputhusseri River in the south, the boundary of Karakkamala in the east, and the proximity of Edavaka in the north, Vellamunda spans 64.54 square kilometers as a model village that fully embodies the agricultural and geographical characteristics of Wayanad.
